Vigan City, a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Philippines, is known for its beautiful Spanish colonial architecture.  Its story from a small town to a globally recognized destination is one of growth and preservation. Originally, Vigan thrived as a trading center in a strategic and fertile location.  However, as a municipality, it suffered from limited resources and administration to develop.  The city's status change served as a turn-around point for the city, as its original and well-conserved Spanish colonial heritage was also a tourist magnet and an attractive investment destination. The economic development is being balanced with the preservation of heritage in the city.  Many tourists are attracted to Vigan because of its well-preserved streets, historical buildings, and vibrant culture, which contributes to its economy significantly. Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year, plays a significant role in Filipino culture and is observed by Filipinos regardless of what antecedents they come from. Centuries of cultural exchange between Filipino and Chinese communities have made Chinese New Year practices a mainstream part of Filipino culture. Shared traditions include passing around the red envelopes known as ang pao and eating tikoy, a sticky rice cake that symbolizes prosperity and family unity. Commercialization and modern media have popularized the holiday further with new ways of wide accessibility.  The overall celebration of Chinese New Year throughout the Philippines really demonstrated how well-assimilated it was. It speaks of the influence that historical interactions have brought, as well as of the shared desire for good fortune and strong family ties.
